Centrally located at the intersection of Montrose Boulevard
and Richmond Avenue, the original property was built in 1941
for the Church of Christ. The structure was designed by the
renowned architect, William Ward Watkin as a Romanesque style
church and educational facility. The property was acquired
by Hansen Partners in the early 1980's and
the sanctuary donated to the city to become the Eleanor Freed
Houston Public Library. The educational facility was transformed
to contain shops and restaurants – now including The
Black Labrador pub and Kraftsmen Bakery – and was
named The Campanile after the bell tower.
